Did you know that 10,568 Olympians competed at the 2012 Olympics in London?
In addition to this, competitors set 38 world records and 99 Olympic records.
Unfortunately, 55% of competitors had cavities, 76% had gum inflammation or mild infection in their gums and 15% had more advanced gum disease.
TFI Dentistry in Thornlands and Labrador can walk you through the steps you can take in order to win a gold medal in regards to your oral health.
Breaking down the statistics
The above statistics were taken from a recent study by the London Eastman Dental Institute in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. This study examined the dental health of athletes competing in the London 2012 Olympics.
While many Olympians presented dental concerns, nearly half of these athletes had not had a dental examination in the previous year. Many of the athletes surveyed reported that poor dental health was having a negative impact on their profession and their personal lives.
Gold medal oral health
The trifecta of great oral health includes brushing, flossing and visiting your dentist every 6 months for a check-up. These steps, if partnered with a healthy diet, can often be enough to help you keep a beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime.
- Brushing
Brushing your teeth twice daily is an essential part of your dental hygiene routine. It is important to replace your toothbrush every 3 -4 months and to use fluoride toothpaste.
- Flossing
While flossing is often ignored, it is a vital part of your dental health. Unfortunately brushing alone misses the gaps between your teeth where food and bacteria can become caught. Flossing removes this bacteria and can protect your teeth against the development of dental cavities.
- Visiting the dentist
At TFI Dentistry we recommend that everyone has a check-up every 6 months. At your check-up our dentists will examine your teeth for cavities as well as assess the health of your gums, in order to prevent gum disease and tooth loss.
We provide a full scale and polish at every check-up.
